Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Economic Growth (ESSEG) program has begun a partnership with a force of nature.  Thanks to the timely intervention of the USAID offices in Santo Domingo, CEES has connected directly with the Minister of the Secretary of State for the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARENA) of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal.

MICHES, Dominican Republic—CEES  in  the form of its Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Economic Growth (ESSEG) program has begun a partnership with a force of nature.  Thanks to the timely intervention of the USAID offices in Santo Domingo (and in particular Odalís Perez, Duty Green, and Dora Plavetic), CEES has connected directly with the Minister of the Secretary of State for the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARENA) of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal.

There are many positive outcomes from the meetings in Santo Domingo, and a great range of opportunities for collaboration in Miches, with ESSEG working collaboratively with SEMARENA central staff and technicians. The efforts will be in partnership to the service of the local community, as is the normal procedure of ESSEG. Matters ranging from mitigating invasive species, creating management plans for the three protected areas in the Municipality of Miches, to diversity of environmental education efforts and possibilities were discussed. The Minister was engaged throughout, extremely knowledgeable about biodiversity and ecology.

Working together, SEMARENA and ESSEG will be more effective in supporting and complementing each other’s efforts in Miches. Additionally, the collaborative approach can be used as a model and replicated in other communities all over the Dominican Republic. CEES thanks The Minister and his talented staff for bringing such energy, knowledge, and creativity to these meetings as we address the key environmental and social problems of Miches. CEES looks forward to continuing to develop the new collaboration between ESSEG and SEMARENA.
